horror books and the improvement of horror music
It’s obvious to anyone going to the theaters on a semi regular basis in this modern day and age that horror music are ever improving in quality and caliber. Writers and directors are finally figuring out what makes a good horror movie and what makes a bad one. But something many of us fail to remember is that many of these music today are based off of fantastic horror books. That’s right, many (if not most) if the great new horror music are based off of classic or modern horror books.
Granted, some of the newer music aren’t the best. But many filmmakers have kept true to the horror books that their music are inspired by. For example, recently the movie 1408 has been released, based off of a Stephen King short story. This is a great example of excellent execution of a movie based off of famous horror books. Similarly, The Mist was released recently also based off of a Stephen King short story. The Mist is another excellent example of a movie successfully doing justice to its inspiring horror books origin.
However, we have seen filmmakers dabbling in new territories and breaking free from many of the tired tried and true formulas of slasher music and teen killing romps. It seems as though many filmmakers are looking at horror books in the small press and independent press for good ideas. This we should all be thankful about. Sure, Stephen King is a great writer, but there are countless talented writers in the small and indy press just dying to have one of their horror books turned into film. Now let’s not forget the power of the internet! Now with barriers disappearing seemingly on a daily basis, more and more independent folks are able to see their horror books adapted into film. Sure, many of these indy films won’t see the big screen and will probably have a limited DVD release, but that doesn’t mean they’re not good! It simply means they didn’t have the financial backing to get the coverage that more major video companies would have supplied. Still, we cannot stress enough how important it is that horror books are having such a large influence in the film industry and it can safely be said that there’s a very bright future for all of us in the realms of horror books and horror music.
