horror books and what’s in store

horror books & the future

With the digital revolution of books and even more specifically horror books there has been a spilling of content into the genre. There’s two ways to look at this. In other words, it helps us discover people who may never have been discovered otherwise. The other side of the argument is that it floods the marketplace with too many horror books thus making it difficult to siphen through and find the true quality work. Personally, I believe there’s merit to both of these arguments. Sure, it allows a lot of not so skilled writers to put their work on the marketplace.. but so what? Doesn’t that just make the more quality work stand higher above the muck? And with more high quality work coming in at the same time it puts pressure for people to be even more skillful and more creative, thus pushing the envelope even further.

Things probably won’t start looking up for a while, at least not until the economy starts shaping up. With much of the middle class no longer having to worry as much about healthcare costs, they’ll have more money to spend on things like horror books. Clearly healthcare isn’t the cure to all ills (no pun intended) but there’s a good chance it will help significantly.

Some fear that the U.S. I say those statements are premature. Let us not forget the hurdles that the United States has defeated in the past. Sure, things on the international stage are much different than they were at that time. But is it too presumptuous to say that America still has a shot? Is it too presumptuous to claim that the United States won’t be a Chinese controlled nation in fifty years? I don’t think so. Once this happens I think we will see a new and even more powerful United States, one that has a strong economic future on the international stage. If that were to happen my friends, rest assured, the sales for horror books would sky rocket and all of us would benefit as a result.

So where do we go from here? Well, horror books publishers need to soldier on. Continue to release interesting and creative works. Once things finally come onto the mend and the days of economic sorrow are for the most part behind us we can look forward to a much more rewarding publishing environment. Until that day comes, keep your shoes on, it’s going to be a long march.

Planet of the Apes [Blu-ray]

Many early science fiction films are now, quite inadvertently (and in most cases undeservedly), objects of camp attention: we laugh at the silly makeup, tin-can special effects, and the naive “high-tech” dialogue. Planet of the Apes is no such film. Its intelligent script, frightening costuming, and savagely effective conclusion (which needs no big-budget special effects to augment its impact) rem…

When her old orphanage goes on the market, Laura (Belén Rueda, Amenábar’s The Sea Inside) and…
